Weymouth Set to Shine as 2012 Sailing Comes to Dorset’s Jurassic Coast

Spring and Summer 2012

There’s no better time than the Summer of 2012 to go camping in Dorset. As well as all the usual sights, attractions and events, Weymouth and Portland will be part of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Dorset’s World Heritage Jurassic Coast will provide the backdrop for all the 2012 sailing events, so regular visitors will get the chance to enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime UK-hosted global event in their favourite holiday spot. Alongside all your favourite places and activities there’ll be the added bonus of the special events being put on just for the Games.

We’ve picked out a selection of events that might float your boats - including the Olympic fortnight - in our new 2012 Events Diary. We hope you’ll find it a handy way to help plan your 2012 visit.

For those who’ve yet to experience the wonders of Dorset and its coast, camping is an excellent, cost-effective way to make more of those Weymouth 2012 tickets.

Instead of just taking a day or two watching the sailing and soaking up the Olympic atmosphere, come on down for a week or two and take in all that Dorset has to offer. There’s masses to see and do, from amazing scenery, beaches and coast, to some of the best historical and leisure attractions Britain has to offer, from Castles and Steam Railways to Aquaria and amazing museums. On top of that there are some uniquely beautiful villages, like Abbotsbury, with is sub-tropical gardens and world famous swannery.

Add to that the other amazing events that Dorset hosts, like the world-renowned Great Dorset Steam Fair and the spectacular “TankFest” at the Tank Museum and 2012 promises to be a truly amazing year to pitch-up or unhitch in Dorset.

If you’re hoping to camp or caravan booking is always advisable, especially during the main weeks of summer and the school holidays. Visitor numbers during the Olympic and Paralympic weeks are projected to be similar to those experienced in the Weymouth area during a “normal” Carnival week. But, by that time the long awaited Weymouth Transport Package, including the new Weymouth Relief Road and thousands of extra park-and-ride parking spaces will be fully operational. Dorset County Council is providing a free, real-time, on-line traffic and travel information service to help visitors plan their journeys.

And, as you’d expect, during the closed and low-season, the camping parks have been doing their bit to help make your 2012 visit to Dorset even more enjoyable. At West Fleet Holiday Farm, the old favourite “Bar in the Barn” is undergoing a complete rebuild ready for the new season. And at Bagwell Farm Touring Park new serviced tent pitches are being created with their own water point and grey-water drains next to the electric hook-up point.

...And don’t forget

If you don’t fancy camping and you haven’t got a caravan, you could still stay in the Bungalow or the Caravan at Sea Barn Farm.

These holiday lets are available for rent throughout the year and have amazing views. Visit www.seabarnholidays.com for more details!
